 | Massey To Test BedsThe new Cowhouse at Massey is to be used as a testing ground for many aspects of NZ housing systems. Some may say a lot of this has been done oversees and yes it had.
There are however variable things we do in NZ and can not be compared with EU or USA systems.
For starters our cows may only have a 5% uniformity while mots EU and USA cows are within 5% in size and weight from each other.. That posses some issues when it comes to "catering for all and sundry"
We do not house full time either (most do not) so a Hybrid system is designed to allow for the best of pasture and the best of housing to be utilized.
The next few years be interesting what we do know is that initial test on Cow mats resulted in a clear message from the bovine girls is that they do not like water beds

 | Farmers Impressed With Massey CowhouseThe new Cowhouse at Massey was "labeled" as impressive by visiting farmers.
Cowhouse Ltd consulting, Cowhouse constructionLtd and Technipharm delivered this project to Massey
University.
The design represents a variable hybrid design which gives great flexibility in future changes to meet requirements inside the cow house.
All stalls can be changed in width and set up to accommodate different cow sizes, mobs can be separated by "high Gates" which simply can be dropped where ever they are needed.
An other special design feature is all the swinging gates which can be hinged on any point and lock variable gabs and distances from 3-5 meters.
A rope scraper system allows simplified management and maintenance and a ability to "stop" and lock the scraper lane, so only part of the lane is scraped.
The system will be commissioned in Dec 2013

 | Cowhouse Design More Than Just A Build ProjecCowhouse design more than just a build project
Cowhouse design is an skill of blending animal handling skills and experiences with Animal wellbeing good practice regulations, expected out put (production) and input resources (labour), environmental needs and building and financial limitations.
The most dangerous decision any farmer could make is accepting a standard plan from a builder as the best and cheapest solution for his farm. Expertise in being able to build a structure is vital, but only after the design process has been completed and all matters of build and implementation are considered. the latter should involve independent outside expertise. There a re a few reputable builders in NZ which actively encourage clients to seek outside expertise, and some engage this expertise as part of the project. Farmers should not design their own systems, unless they have significant overseas farming experience in farming animals indoors and even then they often only know a few systems as they are on farm and not engaged on a day to day basis on new developments and trends.
