Highest Level Of Containment Level Achieved I

ECOBAG is breaking new ground in leachate containment systems by having provided the Waste Management Group landfill in Marton with a total leachate containment system. Referred to as the "devils cocktail" the rain water leachate from the landfill requires containment and processing to meet stringent environmental standards. ECOBAG™ was able to provide a highly internationally certified system to ensure leachate could be safely contained while at the same time avoiding smell and rain water ingress.

Stand Off Bedding

In the end most stand off pads are a short term solution to a long term problem

Bedding options involving bark or peelings are very costly, annual replacement and labour and machinery cost are high. Significant risk issues exist in pathogen both for animals respiratory and human respiratory systems. Stray pathogen affecting milk and udder health are also risk not to be ignored.

In the Netherlands soft bedding or compost housing is under severe limitations due to these factors.

Alternative bedding options are available but not widely known or used (yet) in NZ

Dreaming Of A Payout $9.- / Kg Ms Or More?

Different thoughts and ideas keep floating to the surface, one thing for sure, to just be in a commodity market is not where NZ' s future is. We need to innovate and create farm systems and food products for those wanting these products and prepared to pay for it. In that context $10/ Kg Ms should be a starting point.

Wake Up And "smell The Roses"

Article about re-use of nutrients. In NZ injection is not always feasible ( stones and hills do not help) Equaly or near equal results can be obtained by "dredge" or "dribble" booms which drop the effluent on the ground. Nutrients Captured Are Nutrients Usable

Its well known that Volatilisation is creating not only N losses but also greenhouse gasses .

N kept on farm is N you do not have to buy .

When it comes to N in effluent fresher is better article by Aaron Staffort from a Agresearch study via Balance .

"Aaron says animal waste like manure and farm dairy effluent is a valuable source of nutrients, and farmers should be looking to maximise the value from this resource.

Aaron says all effluent is a valuable resource for delivering nutrients cheaply, although older effluent may mean different response rates.

"In total, plants respond similarly to nitrogen regardless of whether it is applied in fertiliser or effluent, although response patterns may be different due to differences in immediate availability. Minimising the loss of nitrogen from effluent and manure enables the full nutrient value of these resources to be realised."

But Aaron says as dairy farms shift to bigger effluent storage ponds and with the increased use of herd shelters and standoff pads to protect the environment, finding ways to minimise ammonia loss from effluent, both in storage and upon application, will bring more benefits to farmers by retaining more of the nutrient value of the effluent."

Installation Ecobag™

The TechniPharm team installed a 1000 Cube (20 by 20 mm embankment) ECOBAG™ this week just out of Atiamuri. Took 1 day to install. Earthworks and side weedmatting was done by local contractor .

In this case we have a house 40 meters away from the pond, the pond can not go anywhere else due to limitations of site and layout thus a no smelling tidy set up was very much desire.

Regional council under conditions with local rain fall etc required a 2500 M3 pond ( open) we have been able to reduce that to 1000 Cube ( closed system)

Effluent drains from Dairy Shed direct to the ECOBAG™ and can be drained from ECOBAG™ back into the sump from where it goes to the paddock via spray irrigation

Due to the layout of the land this ECOBAG is more or less ":build in the site" where 3 sides of the embankment are "in the bank" and one is above the ground. The ECOBAG™ when full will be just under a meter higher then the embankment

Lucerne A Possibility In A Changing Climate

Opinion
Lucerne is a greatly underrated crop in NZ, new varieties and knowhow in this space has greatly changed the way this crop can be grown very successfully.
With Protein being the most expensive product to buy in, and energy (like Maize) being relatively cheap why are not more farmers growing Lucerne instead of buying expensive protein (grain)?
Even 10% of the farm set aside for Lucerne could make a significant change to the overall average feed cost .

Dairy Systems Help Build Soil

Its been known for years by many farmers around the world and in NZ by farmers having converted from dry land to dairy or those with Dairy Housing that trough dairy cows ( or rather their by product in the form of organic waste top soil levels and fertility increases.
Now confirmed by initial research it may see the proper use of on farm available nutrients adopted in our future farm models.

If we collect all dairy created organic fertiliser and re distribute this in small volumes and evenly over pasture or crop land we will see an increase in top soils levels, fertility and a reduction of imported chemical fertiliser.

This must result in more durable and thus sustainable farm systems, higher levels of top soil and related organic matter will create better nutrient buffers ( reduced N leaching) and better use of soil moisture.

Overseer is not yet reflecting these type of farm models accurately but is hoped that in time the research will be incorporated and reflect the reality better.
